With Star Wars firmly in our minds until at least 2021, I'm feeling philosophical. Normally, this only extends to Star Wars and the Force.

The Force is something that should be mystical, challenging and thought provoking. One of the most famous lessons we’ve learned about it is from Jedi Grand Mater Yoda.

“Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.”

It’s a poignant view of something that we shouldn’t understand completely. It’s there to aid us rather than be controlled by us and it’s not something that should, or can be defined.

Both the Jedi and the Sith split the Force into the Light and the Dark but if “life creates” the Force, can it be so easily categorised?

Here’s the Jedi code:

“There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.”

And here’s the Sith code:

“Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.”

Both of these philosophies have merit but to make us well rounded beings, we need knowledge AND passion. We need peace that’s devoid of chains and shackles.

The main point of the prophecy was that the Force would be brought back into balance. The Jedi thought this meant the eradication of the Sith but that would tip it too far in one direction.

A more likely theory is that Anakin joining the Dark Side and leaving two Jedi and two Sith created an equal balance. I don’t buy that either though.

From the moment we meet him, Anakin is full of emotion and determination. Those traits don’t fade throughout the saga but it strikes me that he’s a force user that’s camped firmly between light and dark. His role was to show that the Force was more than just two sides. It was something that should be embraced as a whole.

Here’s the Grey Jedi code:

“Flowing through all, there is balance. There is no peace without a passion to create. There is no passion without peace to guide. Knowledge stagnates without the strength to act. Power blinds without the serenity to see. There is freedom in life. There is purpose in death. The Force is all things and I am the Force.”

That code IS balance. It’s the knowledge to see all aspects, all traits and all necessities without being consumed by them.

Anakin was neither Jedi nor Sith. He was a Grey Jedi. Someone that embraced the Force and his human side in equal measure.
